Mike..hi. I am the Charlotte that asked the question about moving closer to family. I know we need to relocate but not sure where to go. I would like to move to Rockford, Illinois to be closer to our church, friends, doctors etc. Of course my husband who is about 6-7 years into Alzheimers wants to stay put. I feel we need to do this for “me”. That may sound selfish but I feel it is important. Less driving, especially in the winter. Upkeep on our property is getting to be too much for me. Takes over 1/2 hour to get into Rockford. I take him two days a week to day care. Our son lives in Indiana and they would love to have us closer so they could help us. But they understand our roots here also and that we know no one there. I wish I could twitch my nose and I’d know what to do. Help? I was having computer trouble when the webinar was on..sorry. thanks for any advice.

      Hi Charlotte,
Feeling selfish is OK and is a very common emotion to feel when caring for someone with dementia. In my opinion, more caregivers need to find ways to do more for themselves. Your instincts are telling you what you need to do for your long-term well being, and for the care you are able to provide for your husband. If you are moving to be close to someone who is going to help, I would have them spend a day alone with your husband just to be sure they know what they are signing up for. I would also recommend visiting the place where you want to move with your husband. Not to get his buy in but to see how he handles things. It won’t be easy but it is likely the best choice. Please let me know how things work out.

      Mike
